My child won’t go to bed. What can I do?
When bedtime becomes a daily negotiation—one more story, one more drink, one more question—it is easy to end the day angry and exhausted.
Short answer
A predictable routine, a clear ending, and calm consistency usually help more than adding new arguments every night.
The aim is not to force sleep. It is to create the conditions for rest and make bedtime predictable.
What may be happening
Going to bed means stopping an activity, separating from the adults, and accepting that the day is over. Some children find one or more of those transitions difficult.
If the boundary changes every night depending on how strongly they protest, negotiation can also become part of the bedtime routine.
What you can do
Create a simple sequence that can be repeated most nights: for example, wash, pajamas, story, goodnight.
Give advance notice before the transition and offer small choices that do not change the main boundary:
“It’s bedtime. Do you want this story or that one?”
“Would you like the door a little open or closed?”
Once the routine is finished, keep your response brief and predictable. Warmth and firmness can go together.
What to avoid
Avoid turning bedtime into a long debate or adding many new conditions after the routine has ended.
Threats, shame, or using sleep as punishment can make bedtime more emotionally charged.
If it does not improve
Look at the whole evening: screen use, activity level, timing, naps if relevant, the length of the routine, and what happens each time your child gets out of bed.
Sometimes the difficulty is less about sleep itself and more about the pattern that has formed around bedtime.
When to seek help
If sleep problems are persistent, significantly affect daytime functioning or family wellbeing, or you have concerns about breathing, pain, or another health issue, consult an appropriate health professional.
Tell Kora what happens from the moment you announce bedtime until your child finally sleeps. The sequence can reveal where the pattern is getting stuck.
